The evening begins with a community potluck supper, followed by an exciting night of square dancing at 6:15 PM with caller Chuck Novak.
Chuck’s dancing journey began in the early 1970s with the M.S.U. Promenaders at Michigan State University. Inspired by national conventions and backed by strong encouragement from the gay square dance community, Chuck officially founded the Grand River Squares on February 9, 1988. The inclusive club started small at Fountain Street Church, dancing its first winter with just seven people and a "phantom" dancer to complete the sets.
Over nearly four decades, Chuck has steered the club through multiple homes—including several LGBT Network buildings—while teaching everything from Basic steps to Advanced classes.
Whether you are a seasoned pro or a complete beginner, Chuck’s welcoming style and decades of experience will have everyone moving in no time. Bring a dish to share, and get ready for a memorable evening of community and dance!
